“Cupids Hunt” Pattern Compote, Crystallography piece manufactured by Dithridge Glass Company in 1879. Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG). This open compote remained in the same family, passed down, for 140 years. It is in very nice condition with no cracks or chips.

The compote has detailed scenes all around the bowl: Wingless cupid figures hunting deer with a dog, fishing in a boat, blowing a horn, and dragging a net full of fish. On either side of this Victorian compote is a down-turned horseshoe with the head of cupid inside.

The compote features a decorative production technique called "crystallography," or “Crystalloid,” a rather obscure process of using acid to etch a pattern into a mold rather than carving a pattern into a mold. The result was a highly detailed raised image on the final glass piece. Glass pressed from this mold has a granular surface with clear, intaglio figures forming the design. This process was short-lived.

Measurements are 5 ½” (H), and 6” (bowl diameter at rim).

Price is $46.00. firm.
