Purple Smokebush gets its common name not from the tiny, insignificant, yellowish flowers which appear in spring, but from the billowy hairs which turn a smokey pink to purplish pink in summer, thus covering the tree with fluffy, hazy, smoke-like puffs throughout summer. No serious insect or disease problems. Tolerates deer, drought, and clay soil.
Bright Eyes Phlox is a garden phlox which grows 1.5-2' tall. Fragrant, tubular flowers are soft pink with red eyes. Good fresh cut flower. Attracts birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Tolerates deer, clay soil, and black walnut.
Pink Cascade Tamarix is an open, multi-stemmed shrub with arching branches and fine, feathery foliage. From late spring through summer, it has cascading plumes of small, deep pink flowers. Grows 10 to 15 ft. tall and 8 to 10 ft. wide. Tolerates deer and drought.
Red Prince Weigela features red flowers that bloom in mid to late spring, with a scattered and much less significant repeat bloom sometimes occurring in late summer to early autumn. Flowers retain bright red color as they age. They're attractive to hummingbirds. Tolerates clay soil.
